an AMAZING weekend at the PETCO Mega Adoption Event
boulder, thank you for holding off the crazy hailstorms, lightning and other wacky May-Day weather escapades so we could have a wonderful day of adoptions. the Boulder Humane Society teamed up with 27 other incredible shelters and rescues in our local area. we laughed, we cried... we adopted 7 dogs to new homes! it was an amazing day. here's some of my favorite shots:

Boulder Bears for Dummies {like me}
when i first moved here i thought the "Beware of Bears" sign posted at many trail heads was just a simple precaution...
turns out {after listening -trembling- to my friend's meet & greet encounter with one of the beauties on the Brainard Lake Trail} they are very much a part of our lives here in CO. since this is all new to me, here's some super-quick research on surviving your bear experience.
a handy resource: Colorado's resource for Bear Awareness 101.
if i came across a bear i'm sure i wouldn't remember a single survival tip, but it's good to keep these ideas from mountainnature.com in the vault. No matter how hard i try to focus i can always get a good laugh outta #4 & #7. See the entire list here.

1. Assess the situation. Are you dealing with a black bear or a grizzly? Why does it matter?
2. Do Not Run. You can't outrun a bear so don't even try.
3. Try to retreat slowly. Back up slowly and try to put more space between you and the bear. Talk calmly so that it can identify you as human, and slowly back up.
4. Climb a tree if available. If you have enough time, and the bear continues to move closer, take advantage of a tall tree to climb. Remember, black bears are strong climbers as well.
5. If the bear charges you, play poker. Bears will often bluff charge before attacking.
6. Use your pepper spray. This is a last resort.
7. If a black bear makes contact fight back. If the attack escalates and a black bear (or any bear that appears to have been stalking you) physically contacts you, fight back with anything that is available to you. Black bears tend to be more timid than grizzlies and fighting back may scare the bear off.
good luck out there! love, jayda & courtFriday, February 25, 2011

one of the highlights of my week is a photo sesh with the cats at our Boulder Humane Society. what i didn't know is that we desperately need more cat photo & video help! if you already volunteer with the cats (completed your interviews & training) i would looooooove to meet you for a cat photo day, just send me a line, or please consider volunteering with us on any level! they also need help with many other programs- especially the thrift store.
here's a link to the volunteer info {the next volunteer information session is Tuesday March 8, 2011 from 630-730}
some of my favorite shots over the short time i've been with them:

freedom for pups with voice and sight tags!
one of my top reasons to move to Boulder? love of animals.
when i heard that dogs had "humans" and not "owners" here i melted. when i was introduced to the on-going joke about 2 dogs to every person in Boulder, i made the final decision to make this place my home. what a great place to enjoy your four-legged pal!
what i didn't know before i moved here, was the thrill of hiking with my pup –leashless! i got my voice & sight tags as a gift one December and our world was changed forever. Jayda's free! on marked trails she can roam around with me and enjoy her hike without a dog-gone leash attached to her. here's the trail's guidelines page too. "happy tails" to you & yours!

a perfect day of Boulder sunshine
today was 65 degrees, and ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.
if you were lucky, you got to spend a while laying in the grass somewhere in the sunshine. these little guys set a glowing example one day in the Chatauqua meadow.
a southern girl's guide to Boulder's wavering weather patterns:
1. give your best tough & unconditional love. let Boulder know that no matter how much he tests you, you still love him. i say something along the lines of "ahhhh, Boulder, go ahead and try me with your –13 degrees. i know you won't be able to stay bitter. you'll be back to beautiful tomorrow."2. layer like it's nobody's business — forget cotton as a winter option. wear layers in different thicknesses. the temps can drop about 20-30 degrees at night regardless of the season.
3. pack your car with a "Boulder Weather Survival Kit" mine would contain SUNBLOCK, an umbrella & weather-proof coat, fluffy sweater, extra socks, a non-itchy beanie and Justin's Almond Butter. : )
